No Sharp Teeth, Please

(“Gossip” – One of my all-time favorite Norman Rockwell paintings.)
My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. Psalm 57:4

It is one thing to climb on your soapbox and respectfully disagree with someone, but it is quite another when you find yourself expending time and energy blasting people (even if you don’t call them by name).

About a year a half ago, I ran across a post on Buried Treasure Books entitled Gossip-Free Zone. It is good food for thought.

Never forget your blog is public.

Always remember to turn the other cheek.

Yes, ranting is occasionally acceptable, but unless you have a private blog (and even then, I hesitate to think it’s ok), ranting about others in a vicious, faceless way is rarely helpful or appropriate.

Another post from Buried Treasure books: Non-Gossip Week is a very well thought out post on guarding your mouth when it comes to what you say on the internet.

Watch the teeth…they are sharp.

Watch the tongue…it wags.

At the Well Blog Button

On Monday, I have a post coming out for At The Well about being discreet. I encourage you to consider what you’ve read here, dig into Scripture on the matter, read the post from At The Well, and join in the discussion!

  1. oh mean commenters. i’ve gotten some myself. especially when i’ve announced a pregnancy. but since losing two babies in the past few months, i was not and am not ashamed to announce our newest pregnancy. i’ve been looking all over your blog. i love it!! and i think i’m falling into that quiverful thing. ;0) we have three babies in heaven. four on earth. and on in the ‘oven’. :0) can’t wait to read more of your blog. it’s beautiful!!

  2. So true~
I can’t believe the rude and vicious comments I read on some blogs I visit.
So far none on my blog!
One situation I did have last year was:
A person that read my blog, then wrote bad things on her blog about me and a situation I shared. She called names and pointed others to read my blog entry!

    Well done!
    Blessings,
    Georgiann

  3. Thank you so much for this awesome post..Please keep exploring this issue. I struggle with this terribly – when to speak, when to be silent, what to speak when I do open my mouth..I am almost at the point where I think I may never speak of anything but to my husband, and leave the rest to the Lord. The temptation to vent hurt/betrayal is too great and too easily slips into something malignant.

  4. Thank you so much for doing this post along with the one At the Well! It was a huge blessing and toe stomping for me! :D Thank you!

  5. Wonderful food for thought Amy! We must ALWAYS guard our tongues…it is biblical. :) Gossip in any form is SIN…we often forget. Thanks for the reminder.

    God bless you!

  6. Yes, this is so important, especially for those of us who are open about our Christianity. The worst thing we can do is tell everyone how much we love the Lord then turn around and bite someone’s head off! Thank you for the reminder!

  7. At least a couple times a month I go back and delete posts. I need to share my hurts and burdens with the Lord and get healed, before I sit down to write.
