Making Your FLYlady Subscription Less Annoying

So, I’ve been back at this FLYlady thing for about a week now.  Am I seeing results?  Definitely!  But before I do a post on the results I’m seeing…

I got several comments on my post about going back to FLYlady asking how I dealt with all the emails FLYlady sends out.  Years ago, I just deleted at will.  I really don’t like to read the testimonials and when you are new to the program, there are a lot of aspects of FLYlady you just aren’t ready for.  So, how can you make your FLYlady subscription less annoying and time consuming?

My answer was TweetDeck!

OK, a few of you are wondering what in the world I just said, but here’s how it works…

I’m on Twitter.  I use TweetDeck to control Twitter.  I do not read every single tweet from every single person I follow–it would be impossible.  I have each person I follow in a category specific to them and each of those categories could, theoretically, have their own column in TweetDeck.  I can have as many columns up on TweetDeck as I’d like, but really, I only read a few.  FLYlady is now one of those (and I will be shortly unsubbing from the emails that actually come to my inbox).

The way I set up a window for FLYlady stuff was by adding a new column (plus sign at the top left of the deck) and then clicked on Groups/Lists in the window that pops up.  There, I typed in FLYlady and added @theflylady and @flyladykelly and saved and closed.   I then moved the column (using the arrows at the bottom of each column) to the far left of my screen so I would see it first thing every time I opened TweetDeck.

This is especially helpful since the computer seems to be my biggest time waster.  If I sit down here and look at TweetDeck, the first thing I see is FLYlady telling me to do something else.  I feel like if I get those tasks done (2 minutes working on a Hot Spot or 5 minutes in my worst room or decluttering for 15 mintues), then it is okay if I take a short break at the computer (key word here is SHORT).

I don’t have Facebook, so I don’t know if there is a way to set this up similarly in Facebook, but I’d encourage you to try this INSTEAD of the emails and see how it works!

  1. Oh Amy! I had to chuckle when I read the title of your post! I’ve been fighting the urge all day today to just run through and delete the 30 emails from this week that’ve been sent from FlyLady! But of course, I can’t bear to, and I know I will get around to reading them in the morning or during naptime tomorrow since my van will be in the shop, again.

That being said, I love Flylady. I think she’s awesome and, on normal only slightly insane days, I love sitting down with a cup of coffee and reading the inspirational stories they send out. I usually scan the email and see if they are testimonials for products instead, and those just get skimmed or deleted altogether.

But, being a self proclaimed flybaby myself, I think I’ve been avoiding the flylady this week because my routines have been tossed out the window with my SIL’s wedding this weekend and all the hectic-ness surrounding it! LOL

Ok, I’ve gotten really off topic! Sorry! I’d never heard of the tweetdeck though, I really sounds like something to look into! On facebook, they dont send out nearly as many messages as in the emails, so they dont take much time at all to read!

  2. That is the one reason Flylady drives me crazy. Last time I was on it, I spent a day printing off all zones and interesting articles and put them in a 3 ring binder. Then life got me and cleaning stopped, we moved, blah, blah, blah. Now I am back to Flylady, but I can’t find my binder. So, I may have to deal with all the e-mails till I get the printer going again! :)

    • I did the same thing with printing them and putting them in a binder, but this time I really needed someone in my face telling me WHEN to do it! :)

      • lol- I went through that… I spent like 2 days getting all the emails and articles that I thought I needed and printing them out, and put them in a notebook…. I eventually took them all out and shredded them for mulch! LOL. Then I just took some notebook paper and wrote things down as I did them, or as I thought I needed them. I don’t even know what flylady has for her detail cleaning list anymore, because I’ve adjusted it for my house and my needs… LOL, besides to keep the house clean, I have to do everything on her list almost every day so it doesn’t help to deep clean at all! LOL

  3. Still not up for FlyLady, but thanks for telling me about how TweetDeck works. I really don’t like that I’ve had to increase my following so much because I liked to read only the people who were most interesting to me, but I had to in order to help increase my followers. TweetDeck might just solve my problem….

  4. I’ve still never tried tweetdeck but I really should. I’d have no life if I followed every tweet but I’m sure I miss a ton of things I’d like to know about. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation!
