I almost always participate in Works for Me Wednesday. However, this week, I was a little stumped.
Kristen’s topic was Back to School, and I sat here staring at the screen thinking to myself…
I never left school, so how can I go back?
Oh, sure we take breaks all the time, but for all intents and purposes, we are year-round homeschoolers. Back to School doesn’t hold much meaning around here.
However, the more I thought about it, I realized for those of us who homeschool year round, there are a few “magical moments”…
1. “Box Day” – For us, it is a Sonlight box full of the next Core’s books or really any box that has new books in it! We tear into it and admire each and every item. We add pages to notebooks. We dream of all the adventures we’ll have.
2. New School Supplies – I make one huge order to Discount School Supply every year. I’ve been doing this for about 7 years now. Their products are reasonably priced and of good quality. And there is just something wonderful about brand new school supplies. In fact, we often buy supplemental supplies throughout the year and they are just as wonderful…just maybe not quite as a wonderful as an entire box of goodies!
3. Cracking open a new book – This happens quite often throughout our school year and I love it! There again, I think it makes a child (and a mommy) feel like there is an adventure ahead! It is something new and different from the last thing you did. What a thrill!
4. Special projects – We used to do a Show & Tell Night with the grandparents. This is something I’d like to reinstate (good intentions, poor follow-through has been my excuse up until now…someone want to hold me accountable???) Special projects are not something we do often (hence the name “special”), so every time we did something that was out of our norm for homeschooling, the kids went wild with excitement and couldn’t wait until Show & Tell Night to share with their grandparents the fruit of their fun. I really want to bring this back.
Now, it’s your turn! Whether you school year round or not, what are some of your “magical moments?”

Box Day was pretty magical for us, too! We were all so excited as we awaited the arrival of our Sonlight box. 🙂 Also, every time I sit down with the kids to read a new story is a special moment. I look forward to it at least as much as they do!

oh, I LOVE getting boxes of books and school supplies, and starting a fresh book – it’s so exciting! I don’t school year-round, I take holidays, but during the holidays we do projects and extra practical learning/fun things like more cooking, crafts etc… and that’s one of the other things I love – setting up my schedule for the following school term, and starting a fresh term with fresh subjects or fresh books and fresh themes etc. There is something wonderful about having that to look forward to at the end of the holidays! 🙂

Good post! We don’t formal school thru the summer, but we never give up learning: field trips, music, art, history, science, chicken raising, backyard exploring, nature…
Today is our first day back to the formal schooling. I think the kids are looking forward to it.

Hi Amy~
I was trying to find some of you old recipes you posted a few years ago. I’m having a hard time navigating your new blog to find them.
Can you direct me?
I wanted to look at the meat braid thing you made and also your fall carmel dip.
I wanted to see if it is simular to the one I just posted?
Thanks,
Georgiann

Georgiann,
I haven’t had the time to go through the blog and categorize anything that lost a category in the move or rework categories to make them more user-friendly. Sorry about that! The stromboli is in this post:

We don’t school year round, but I have been giving it a lot of thought lately. As a family of seven kids, it would be much easier on us to use the entire year as our school year.
My favorite part of the new year is finding all the best prices on the books and then getting those books in the mail.
Amy, any suggestions on schooling year round?

I’ve written 2 posts (one here: https://raisingarrows.net/2010/04/homeschooling-year-round.html and one over at The Homeschool Classroom: http://www.hsclassroom.net/2010/03/why-school-year-round/ ) If that doesn’t help, send me an email 🙂

This is very sweet! It’s important to remember that sometimes the most special moments are the ones that can happen every day 🙂

Yes, a new book is always a treat! Also when my kids G&G come out in September every other year or sometimes every year!… My kids LOVE library day.

Great points! I love a nice big box from Discount School Supply! I’m waiting for a decent shipping discount to put my order in.

Shipping is always free if you order over $79…doesn’t seem hard for me to do! (I also used to go in on an order w/ friends to get the free shipping)
