You know you’ve gone overdue when your father-in-law calls every day to check on you. 😉
Overdue isn’t really anything new for me. But overdue, no matter how prepared you are to be there, isn’t exactly the place any expecting mama really wants to be.
Yesterday at my dr’s appt, we had a LONG discussion over options and where to go from here. I have the most laid back OB ever and I love that about her. She just let me talk it out until I came to a place where I was comfortable with all that was going on. So, here is the plan…all dependent upon God’s plan…as it should be.
I am dilated to a 3, so progress is being made.
Baby is head down, something I didn’t think was possible considering my last two babies had the tendency to enjoy the breech position.
I feel comfortable going one week overdue, but no more. Not because of my own comfort level (which by the way, is quite under control at this point! yay!) but for a myriad of other personal reasons.
If I do not go into labor by this coming Monday, I will go to my dr’s appt that afternoon and we will discuss plans for a c-section.
One way or another, baby will get here, and I am so very excited to meet this new little one! I want to know if he/she has hair and what color. I want to see who he/she looks the most like. I want to nurse a newborn again, bathe a newborn again, diaper a teeny-tiny hiney again!
And oh the pictures! I cannot wait for photos to be focused on baby, rather than a sleepy mama who looks like she stuffed a beach ball up her shirt! 😉
Thanks so much for all the love and encouragement and prayers! I have been so blessed by them!

I am curious to know the reasons you would chose to schedule a c-section versus an induction? I know that can be a touchy subject for many, but it is one that I must consider also. Though I don’t know I will go overdue (I’m only 33 weeks right now) I am trying to find info on both sides (c-section vs induction) as I am trying for VBAC. I was wondering if you could possible share with me (via email or here) about why you would choose c-section over induction and the situation regarding making such a situation (if one exists – like for me, trying for VBAC, I know the high risks of complications from inductions especially with regards to my old incision). Anyway, I would really appreciate it if you have the time and energy…or even some other resources you’ve found that I could read. Thanks so much!
You and your family are in my prayers. Praying for the labor to be what you and God want it to be 😉

Brianah,
I don’t mind sharing at all. Inductions are not the safest way to go for VBACers. My last c-section was only 20 months ago, whereas, my first VBAC following a c-section was nearly 3 years between births. We did induce that time. With the scar being fairly “new”, my OB thinks it best not to tax that incision with the rigors of pitocin. Ultimately, it is safer for me to labor on my own and have a VBAC, second best choice is a scheduled c-section where a close eye can be kept on the original scar. My OB is not an advocate of repeat c-sections, but there are several other extenuating circumstances in my case that make going several weeks overdue waiting for labor unwise. Those include a history of placental breakdown, 10#+ babies, and the diastasis the creates malpresentation the further along I get.
Hope that helps 🙂

Thanks so much for taking time to tell me about your choice! This is something I am really struggling with. My babies will barely be 14 months apart and after my horrible induction with my first, I am really hoping for a better go with this one. I was induced 5 weeks early with my first son and labored for almost 3 days with everything tried (maxed out on pitocin, cervidil, breaking my water, etc).
I am praying for a VBAC, but also worried about the risks of induction since my incision is just a baby itself…lol. Thanks for sharing your experience, it’s helpful to hear how others feel about this issue since it is kind of rare in this day.

It is VERY rare these days. In fact, the hospital staff called my doctor and asked if she knew I’d had 2 c-sections and was planning to VBAC (as if I was withholding info from her!)
It sounds like you’ve had a rather traumatic experience. That alone, is going to take a bit to overcome. {HUGS} But, you have every right to try to VBAC. As my OB says, I’m an adult and I can make my own decisions. 😉

Amy,
It sounds like you have a really great doctor! I am with you on not being induced with pitocin if you’ve had a previous c-section. I am sure you have gone over every option with your doctor multiple times and you’ve certainly had children before so you know how things work- lol! But I wonder, could you try an “induction” by simply having your water broken and seeing if things would pick up on their own from there, if they did not then you could have the c-section as planned? I don’t know if that is something you would be comfortable with, but I don’t think that would have any affect on your c-section scar since that is a natural thing that occurs in the course of labor anyway…I could be wrong. I am no fan of inductions or even artificially breaking waters in a labor that has started on its own, but I thought I would just throw it out there as another possible option before going to c-section, which I know you would prefer to avoid if at all possible.
I hope this was an okay thing to suggest, I know you weren’t really asking for any suggestions in your post, but I just felt like this was something I should put out there. Also, please forgive me, I did not have time to read the rest of the comments, so I don’t know if this is something you have already addressed.
Blessings to you, your family, and this new baby. I will be excited to hear about him or her whenever they do arrive! I read your blog often, but I don’t think I have commented much (if at all) before. I really enjoy all the things you have to say here!

Amy,
I suggested stripping of my membranes to the OB and she didn’t think she could even really get to them like she needed since my diastasis causes my uterus to tip so far forward. I think the same would apply to my water breaking since baby is not engaged. But, thank you for the suggestion.
Amy W. says
Well I was hoping to reply to the comment you left me further down, but there was no “reply” button on that one for some reason, so I don’t know if this is going to post in the right place!
See, I knew that you must have already looked into every option possible! And it definitely would not be a good idea to break your water without baby being engaged. You never know what might happen over the next day- maybe you will go into labor before your appointment. And if not then you can rest in knowing that after much thought and prayer you made the decision that you were most comfortable with and feel is best for your baby.
I am looking forward to seeing an announcement sometime soon! How exciting!

Praying for you my dear,
I have the opposite problem I always go early (one of our baby was 6 weeks early) so by 20 weeks I am usually on bed rest and praying for baby to get to term or at least closer to it!
So I can’t tell how you feel but understand that emotionally and physically the end of pregnancy is never all fun but yes I agree baby will be here soon now!
We have a 3.5 months old now and funny thing while changing tiny bum, nursing sometime non stop, cuddling with a sweet smelling baby I miss being pregnant LOL (weird during pregnancy I can’t wait to meet our precious baby, and after birth I can’t wait to be pregoo again)
Can’t wait to see a baby update with baby out soon 🙂
Amy says
Oh, there are definitely some things I’m going to miss…might even do a post on it 😉

Amy – know I am praying for you!!! I, too, am curious about your c-section. Have you had one previously??? If want to talk through it – I’ve had one, I’d love to chat more about it with you!
Amy says
If successful, this will be a VBA2C. You can read about my birthing journey here: https://raisingarrows.net/2009/04/my-birthing-journey.html and also read my comment to Brianah as to why I would go w/ a scheduled c-section over an induction. 🙂

I’m glad you have a peace and a plan. I’ve been praying for you.

Amy – I understand why you would go with a c-section over an induction if you’ve had a previous section. I would NEVER recommend an mamma have an induction after having a c-section previously!!
I was just curious why the need to talk c-section and why not just let baby come out on it’s own. Just curious if there was a medical need or something. I am just always interested since I am a vbacer myself and always am keeping an ear out for others stories for my future pregnancies! 🙂

My SIL is in the same position you are…she is dilated, uncomfortable, and ready to have a baby, but the baby isn’t budging! I will certainly add you to my prayers. Hang in there!

You aren’t overdue! You’re only a few days past 40w, which really…ain’t bad! You’d be overdue if you hit 42 weeks.
P.S., I might need reminded of this come December. Hehe!
Praying for you and your little one.
