Learn the Days of Creation

I wanted to show you a couple of ways we teach our children the days of Creation.

Every child in our household over the age of 2 has made a Creation Book.   These are very simple to put together because the only skills you need are the ability to tear paper and slap on glue!

Supplies needed:

4 pieces of card stock
assorted colors of construction paper
(I buy mine from Discount School Supply)
glue
some sort of writing utensil
(I used colored pencils because that is what I had on hand)
yarn or ribbon
3-hole punch
(not shown)

Starting with the front cover:

Tear a blue globe, add green land, and write the title of your book along with your child’s name.

On the backside of the front cover will be Day 1:

Tear a black piece of construction paper and glue it onto the white card stock.  You can write Day 1 somewhere on the page as well.

Take your second piece of card stock and make Day 2:

This is made from 2 pieces of blue construction paper, torn with a little bit of white peeking out in between.

On the backside of this page is Day 3:

Day 3 is brown paper land and green plants.

Next page – Day 4:

Black construction paper background with bits of yellow for the stars, a yellow crescent moon, and a torn circle sun.

Turn the page over for Day 5:

Torn bits of fish on a blue background and blackbirds in the sky.  {I was making fish alongside my children and my 6 year old said, “Mommy, what is that?”  Yeah, it was that bad!}

Get your last page of card stock out and make Day 5:

My daughter’s rendition of Eve and my gingerbread-looking Adam along with a smattering of animals courtesy of the 5 year old.

And lastly, Day 7:

Yellow rays of Holiness to represent God resting.

We 3-hole punched all the pages and tied them up with string and read them all day long!

I used to type up the Scripture references that went with each day, but that took a tremendous amount of room and usually the child making the book wasn’t literate.  Then, we learned this wonderful little fingerplay for the Days of Creation and they can now “read” their book with ease!  Here are my children demonstrating how we teach the Days of Creation.

Enjoy!

  1. Thanks soooo much! I have only one reader at this time, and this will help to easily cement God’s word with the younger ones. And we can take our fingers anywhere to practice!

  2. Whenever I tell the creation story to Christopher I have to think about a song that my sister taught her Cubbies (the Awana program for 3 &4 year olds). By remembering the rhyming words (one- light when there were NONE) I remember what was created each day. I might have to learn the finger play and start showing Christopher. Pathetic? Maybe. Works? Yes.

  3. My day care of six kiddos will enjoy this project! I’m always looking for ways to share Scriptures with the parents in a non-threatening way. This will certainly do that as the kids ‘read’ to their parents! Thanks, Amy!

  4. I love this! The book looks like such a fun, easy craft and the fingerplay to go along with it will be so helpful. Because, honestly, I STILL have trouble remembering the order of creation! Thanks for sharing!

  5. Just wanted to tell you that my kids love this video. Your guys are just too cute. I love the girls looking at big brother for the cues! And your little guy focusing so intently! We’re going to watch this again and see it we can follow along. Thanks for sharing. BTW, you wouldn’t believe how much my guys laughed about day 5! They love it!!

    Blessings,
    Jill

  6. I love the way you created a notebook out of these. We made our creation days a few weeks ago…and hung them on a wall….may have to consider your approach as well! THANKS!

  7. Thanks Amy, so much for this! We just finished doing this after being inspired by you and the children loved it! I was particularly thrilled by two special things- one was their glowing faces and smiles when we talked about what “Be fruitful and multiply” means- that God was telling Adam and Eve to have lots of children, because he LOVES babies and children and loves LIFE.
The second extra special moment was when we went to make day 7, but I didn’t have a computer and couldn’t remember what you had on your day 7 to signify rest… I was thinking “I don’t want to just leave it blank, rest is more than just emptiness!” so I prayed and asked my 4 and a half year old boy what he thought we should put on there (after reading the passage that went with it). He thought for a moment and said “I want to do Jesus having a picnic with Adam and Eve and their children.” YAY!!! Oh, I was so thrilled… what a beautiful picture of the fellowship and rest they enjoyed together (although granted, before the children arrived, seeing as the fall changed all that… but still!)
