This is not a sight you see every day! But, this was the moment I became convinced I had finally found the art program I was looking for!
We had tried other art programs…very costly art programs…but none of them met our goals and needs.
You see, years ago, a friend from church had given my older two children brief art lessons. They mostly revolved around sketching…the thing my children were most interested in then and now. When we moved away, they wanted to continue sketching, but we didn’t know anyone who could help and all the art programs I purchased in an attempt to fill that gap fell short. Many of the programs were more art appreciation or touched on all different kinds of art, but never mastered any. Some even came with a whole stash of supplies I could never afford to replace once they were used up. I remember begging the children not to do too many projects!
From the moment I was introduced to See the Light Art, I was hopeful this was the art program I had been looking for all along. They stressed how you only needed resources you could easily get your hands on (and probably even had in your home already). They didn’t just touch on sketching, they laid a foundation and then built upon it lesson by lesson. And best of all, they wove Scripture into the entire curriculum!
One of the neatest things about this program is that at the end of every DVD there is a bonus lesson. These are wonderful! The first DVD bonus lesson is chalk art…something I have always wanted my children to learn (we did have some trouble finding the right kind of chalk, but you can order from See the Light).
I have certainly seen my children do amazing things with this program. They are learning so much and doing such an outstanding job at the kind of art they actually WANT to study. But, they are learning so much more than sketching, they are learning skills they can take into other art mediums and Scripture that pertains to all of life!

Yes we do art but currently it is what is scheduled in our curriculum kit. This would be a great help for the next school year because I have decided to piece our curriculum together from different resources. 🙂

Believe it or not, I am a multi-media artist who has a hard time actually TEACHING art to my children because I do it more intuitively and have a hard time breaking down the steps for them. Lots of art programs have left me dry and I’ve not wanted to use them. THIS looks fascinating, though (I viewed the website) and I would love to win !

Do you do the DVDs only, or the online art class, also?
Amy says
We are doing just the DVDs right now.
Bekki says
I have just been doing a little bit here and there based upon my art classes in college. It would be nice to have a set schedule so they would really learn some techniques.
Christin @ Joyful Mothering says
Yes, but mostly it’s been freelance, so to speak. My eldest (9) has her own sketch book and draws naturally to her hearts delight.
But we don’t do much else. I just recently (rec’d today, in fact) bought some “how to draw” books and a sketch book for each of my boys. The how to draw books were recommended by Clay and Sally Clarkson and so far have been put to good use!
But I’d love to get into some color and painting/watercolors. I especially know my 4 (almost 5) year old would prefer painting to sketching.
But like you, I have had trouble finding a good program! THANK YOU for sharing this. Even if I don’t win, I’ll seriously be looking into this. I still have some homeschool money left to spend. 😉
Britton F says
My two oldest LOVE drawing, coloring, etc., so our school day begins with this! Fabulous giveaway 🙂

We do art in our homeschool a lot. We have “art time” each day at 10 a.m. for around 30 minutes. I find activities online or they do some “free” art. I am always looking for art ideas because I’m not very artsy.
Valerie says
How I ended up with four (possibly five, the baby is only two so it’s hard to tell yet!) artists when I can’t draw a recognizable stick figure is beyond me. I’ve seen this program in TOS but didn’t know much about it…I’m so stoked about the possibility of adding it to our school year this fall!
mandy says

We mostly do the Charlotte Mason-style of art educations which is studying picture study of famous artwork. BUT my children are always, always drawing and sketching and coloring. We just don’t “call” it school. 🙂
Jessica B says
It’s like you’ve read my mind. I’ve spent the past few weeks searching for curriculum for my two school aged girls (who would spend all day drawing if I let them…and sometimes I do), and for the life of me can not decide on an art program. This one looks great! I’d love to try it.
Sandy says
I have zero art ability, at least the kinds that involve drawing and painting, so hubby works with our daughter in that area. I would LOVE having a program to teach her from, maybe even I could learn along? LOL, who knows!

I would really love to win this art set for my son, Joshua. He has been drawing since he was around three or four years old, and has filled around what I estimate to be around a hundred notebooks with countless drawings that seem to reflect what he is interested in at the time. When I have looked through these simple dollar store notebooks, I can see some drawings that are more like a single cartoon character who is saying something (or Josh has written a title) that relates to having a difficulty at school, or when he has had a rare time-out for something at home… He uses these drawings and speech bubbles/titles to help him process his emotions, and he prefers drawing with a lead pencil or a biro. He tells me he wants to be an artist when he grows up – although after watching a few of those Cake decorating shows, I introduced him to the idea of combining two passions ~ art, and cake lol.
Anyway, his birthday is on the 13th of March, so if I won this set it would honestly be the best birthday present that I could get him. Thanks for the opportunity to win and God bless 🙂
Erin says

My sons are ages 6, 5, and 2. I do very informal art with the 2 and 5 year old. I have tried to teach my 6 year old some very limited techniques I learned in school, but when we “study” art I tend to teach him about works of art, and the artists who created them. I would love to go beyond that!

miranda says
I read your review when it came out and looked into buying the first set of DVDs. But alas I live in Canada and the exchange rate right now, along with shipping costs and possible customs fees made me hesitant to buy them. The Art Class looked really great, but without know for sure that we would like them I decided it would be better to spend our money elsewhere. Then I found the set in a local thrift store! I could hardly believe my eyes! If I hadn’t seen your review I probably would have passed them by. We have now watched the first 4 lessons, and WOW! I absolutely love it! I am sitting down the with kids too and really enjoying it. I am so excited to see how much we’ll all be able to learn through the class. My kids are eager to do it everyday. My 7 year old son was not too thrilled about it at first. He thought it would be boring – but after the first lesson he was hooked 🙂 Thanks so much for your review! Now that I’ve seen it I definitely think it would be worth the extra cost of getting it to Canada 🙂
Amy says
Wow! What a find! I believe they now have a streaming option too, so you wouldn’t have to pay shipping. 🙂
