Welcome Home – A Return to My Roots {a preview}

{I wish I had a photo of our new house here, but alas, this weekend was too hectic!}

This weekend we officially made the move from our rental in the suburbs to a country home nearby.

It’s been a breath of fresh air…literally!

You see, these are my roots. I grew up the daughter of a farmer, living in a small town, picking sandhill plums and listening to bird calls. Life was slower-paced and I liked it that way.

While I don’t have the time this week to really expound on why this truly will be a return to my roots and even a new learning experience for me, I wanted to give you a quick preview of what you might expect here in the coming weeks…

  • relearning country life
  • working on a huge garden
  • exploring the property (all 100 acres!)
  • considering the doable-for-me aspects of sustainable living
  • looking through some of my old books that might be helpful (listed below)
  • and taking all of you along for the ride!

It’s good to be home!

Speaking of home, this week’s Welcome Home Link Up is brought to you by my dear friend, Tonya who is hosting a book study of The Hidden Art of Homemaking!  I’ll be quietly following along with my own copy as we settle in.  Check it out here

  1. Ooooo! I’m jealous. As a girl who grew up in the woods and helped in the family garden there are a few things I miss now, Looking forward to your upcoming posts.

  2. Oh Amy!! I’m practically jumping up and down over here. : ) I didn’t realize how different this move would be for you guys. Happy for you. I’m am so looking forward to following you along in your journey. My husband and I are planning a move out of the NY suburb where we live, to somewhere out west to the “middle of nowhere.” Problem is that we’ve lived in a city our whole lives, and don’t have any family/friends outside of NY. We have much to learn. : ) Eagerly awaiting these posts. : )

  3. The Lord is taking us on a similar adventure, Amy. In July we left our suburban home to live at a home in the country. Not quite as much acreage- but close. I also grew up a country girl, (couldn’t wait to live in the city) and have really enjoyed getting back in touch with nature and myself. For once we feel settled, something we haven’t felt in years and believe it or not, I enjoy living here so much that I don’t even want to travel anywhere! lol I am learning to enjoy a slower pace, bake bread (something new for me), garden (yes, I’ll be joining you with a huge garden this year) and chickens to come soon. For years I dreamed of homesteading and it just wasn’t possible since we were on the road with my husbands’ job but now I feel the Lord has really given us a gift. I hope you enjoy your new home as much as I’ve enjoyed mine. Blessings!

    • That is so exciting, Tonya! I didn’t realize you were living something so close to what I am! How fun…we’ll be doing this together!

  4. Amy-
    This is awesome! It is our dream to have some land and a bit more room to run! Let me know if you need any gardening books! Congrats on the new place.

  5. That’s so exciting you are moving to the country! We, too are country people and have been enjoying our 5 acres for the past 12 years! It is a lot of work, but its so awesome to let the kids have room to run! (And climb, dig, splash, ride, swing, etc.) We will be attempting chickens in the spring.. that will be new to both of us!

  6. Ooh – I’m looking forward to your posts.

    We’re the homesteading type ourselves, but we’re trying to do it on 1.6 acres. :O) Even so, we raise chickens, rabbits, and bees….and have tried goats and quail in the past too. We do a huge garden, and we just bought a new tiller so hopefully I can help my husband do some of the tilling this year instead of him always having to do it. I’m excited.

  7. So excited for you! We have been on six acres for several years, and I am working on some of those projects this year. I loved homeschooling outside. Nature is a never-ending teacher!
