Our Art & Artist Homeschool Time {+ HUGE Giveaway!}

Art & Artist Time

When we started Art & Artist time as our Special School, there was no doubt in my mind as to what I would be using.

See the Light
We own the entire Art Class library from See the Light, but when we went through it 3 years ago, my Middles were Littles and not as capable as they are now.  My 8 year old has been begging to do them again, and my Bigs could use a refresher, so I decided to start there.  (See the Light also has actual Artist-inspired DVDs called Art Projects that I plan to use next.)

So, let me give you what a typical Art & Artist Time looks like.

art around the table

I serve a snack at the dining room table.  (It’s not good to do Art on an empty tummy!)  While the kids eat, I gather the supplies we need.  We clear the table and pull out the laptop, I put in the DVD while everyone finds a seat and their supplies.  We watch the video and follow along.  I pause as needed to let everyone catch up.

A note on supplies:
Most of See the Light’s lessons do not require special supplies.  I do buy pencils, drawing paper and kneaded erasers and keep them in a box in the closet.  Everyone sits in on the lessons, but only the four oldest children (ages 7 & up) are given the nice supplies.  The little boys (ages 2 & 4) use regular pencils and scratch paper.  They get to feel a part of things and I don’t feel wasteful of our art supplies.

A great Christian homeschool art curriculum

  1. I would like this for my great grand daughter. She will be 2 on Dec.2nd. She already holds a pencil and crayon like a big girl. She loves to write and draw as she calls it. Not sure about which volume since this is all new to me.

    Thanks!!!

  2. Would LOVE this for my kiddos…especially since the curriculum I previously bought is not so whoopie! Thanks for the opportunity!

  3. We have one of these DVDs….the Pointillism one….and LOVE it. My kids actually asked if we could get more….but, it wasn’t in the budget. I would love this set!

    • Oops….what volume??? I am sure you are supposed to do these in order….but I would probably want to jump in with volume 2 or 3…or maybe 5. I don’t know.

  4. Art is BY FAR my kids’ favorite part of homeschooling. We haven’t covered true basics yet, so I’d say at 5 & 7 yrs old, they’d start at volume 1 for a good foundation. Looks like a great program!

  5. Thank you for introducing me to ArtClass! Our children love to draw and our 12yr old is considering being an architect! Equal thanks for the give away!

  6. My youngest could probably start with Volume 2 and my oldest could probably jump in with Volume 6. This looks like a great program! Thanks so much for the opportunity to win the whole set!

  7. We are homeschooling from 2nd grade to 12th right now, with 2 more to enter school yet, so we could use supplies for any age group. :-)

  8. I have been inspired to do art in the afternoon with my kids through reading about your family. These DVDs would be a great help.

  9. Wow I would so love to do this with my 5 youngest. (older children left home already)
Volume 1 would be best for us.
Thanks so much for the opportunity to take part in the ‘draw’. (Lol, pardon the pun)
    Blessings
Dani (Mum to 10, praying for more) :)

  10. My 9-year old loves to draw horses — and she is really talented with them. I would love to see her take her drawings to the next level and learn how to add shading to make them more realistic!!

  11. Wow! This is great. I’ve been searching for a good art program for my little ones. What ages do you recommend this for? My eldest is 4.
    Thanks : )

    • My 4 year old on up do it. My almost 3 year old sits with us and draws, but he isn’t really capable of doing the lessons with any skill. Hope that helps!

  12. I’ve been meaning to teach my kids something similar to “Value and Color” (Vol. 3), but I think “The Basics” (Vol. 1) would be the best for us.

  13. See the Light is a great company. I love that I can use it for multiple age levels in our home school (preschool through high school!) My older artists would enjoy and benefit from VOLUME 5: ART LESSONS 17-20 – Proportions for Composition.

    Blessings!

  14. I would love to win this!! I really wanted to get it for our first year homeschooling but couldn’t afford it. I guess we would start with volume 1. My daughter loves drawing!

  15. Sounds really fun! I’m about to start the journey of homeschooling and I have 3 little boys who love art! Thanks for the opportunity!

  16. We could use any Volume since we have a wide range of kids, but we have not done much in the way of Art in our Homeschool so I’d probably start with Volume One. What a great giveaway!

  17. We would probably have to start at the beginning, with Volume 1, as we haven’t done much of anything as far as art in our homeschool.

  18. My kids would need to start with The Basics. They are 9,7, and 5. I haven’t given any formal art lessons to them yet. Thanks!

  19. I am so excited about this giveaway. I would love all the sets, but my artist son would most benefit from the perspective for landscape (volume 7).

  20. I’ve been looking at this program, but couldn’t work it into our budget with everything else. Thanks for the give away and the chance to win it.

  21. We just started homeschooling last year, and my kids are young (2, 4, 7, and 10) so we would definitely start with volume 1. This looks like a great program!

  22. Ooh, I’ll be pinning this for future use! All your special school subjects make me REALLY excited for the older kid stages to come. Also, I hope to have such a table full of blessings myself someday.

  23. What a great giveaway…I have 2 girls, 8 & 10, that love art. We have been looking at this art class set. I think they would really love to have it.

  24. We would start at the beginning I think. I have been looking at this program and saving the money we need to purchase! Oh I hope we win!!

  25. My boys enjoy drawing, we would start with Volume One though, as I would like to make sure they have a good foundation and firm understanding. Thanks for hosting this giveaway and sharing pics of your art time!!

  26. Wow, this looks awesome! I didn’t even think to look for something like this for our homeschool. I would love to start my children out with volume 1: the basics. Looking forward to this!

  27. This looks like a great set. As for the volume that I think would be best for our family, probably the first to start with as my little man is just starting to get into drawing and art. His recent favorite thing to do is paint!

    • Oops…I forgot to leave what volume would work best for us! My oldest has taken art classes in the past so probably volume 2 or 3.

  28. Oops! Forgot about which volume. ….I have NO idea as I am not familiar with the program. I have 3 kids (7, 3 & 18 mths)….I am open to suggestions ;-)

  29. What a great giveaway! My children are lower elementary on down… At this stage in life it seems that art often gets pushed to the side b/c I don’t have time or energy to figure something out. This would surely help!

  30. Woohoo!!!!
My boys would love this!!! Especially the oldest 3.
My 1st and 3rd son are very much into drawing.
    They’d love it!
    Thank you for hosting this!!

  31. Should I be embarrassed that we would probably need to start at volume 1? My 4th grader might be able to jump into volume 4, but my younger two would need to start at the beginning.

  32. Volume 1 would be a great starting point for my daughter (9yo). She is very interested in art, and it is difficult to find quality art instruction. We’ve been praying about how to foster this interest in her. Thanks for the recommendation!

  33. We would probably on use some of the early DVDs to start, but will get plen of use out of the, over the years with 7 children to homeschool.

  34. Probably volume 1. We are not an artsy bunch. Well, there’s hope for the boys from their dad’s side. :) Thanks for the chance.

  35. I have 3 children ranging in age from 8 – 12, but I think we would still start with volume one just to get all of the basics from the ground up. All of my children enjoy art so we really appreciate a chance at this giveaway. It will be a great addition to someones library!

  36. Would love the volume 4 on color blending. DD isn’t happy with some of her creations due to the fact that she can’t blend colors.

  37. Yay! Thanks for the opportunity. ..we would LOVE to have this! And volume 1 would probably be best for us so we can start from the beginning.

  38. this would be a great addition to our school day. My children love art, although I am not very confident in finding art projects.

  39. I’m thinking we would definitely need to start with Vol 1 since we haven’t done much formal art instruction. I’ve looked at this set before but it wasn’t in the budget; I’d love to win it!

  40. I’m thinking we’d have to start with Vol 1 since we haven’t done much formal art instruction. I’ve looked at this set before but it wasn’t in our budget. I’d love to win it!

  41. As far as which volume would work best…well, ALL OF THEM! I have at least 3 artists in the family that are at different ranges at this time. I think that we would benefit from different ones :)

  42. This is great! I’ve been wanting to incorporate art in our homeschool day and was just given (by a family member) lots of art supplies for all four of my kids. Now, we just need the art curriculum! All of my children are at different levels but I believe all would benefit from using Volume 1. Thanks for the giveaway, Amy!

  43. I bought the Crossmaker for Easter this year. That was our first experience with See the Light and we would love to have more. Vol.4 looks like a good one for my kids.

  44. We are new to homeschooling and I would love this for my 5 kids! Considered purchasing many times, but as first year had to focus finances on other subjects.

  45. Volume one would work best for us. We have 6 (out of 8) in school. The two oldest have done some drawing, but most of them need to start with the basics!

  46. Wow! Awesome give away! I’ve been looking at this set for a long time but it is always the last thing on my list of essentials. My four homeschoolers love it! We’ve been to the website and have done all the free lessons lol! I would like to start with the basics for them. I love your blog it’s one of my favs! Thanks for the chance to win!! God Bless you and your beautiful family :)

  47. Aloha! Thank you for offering the chance to win this wonderful gift of Art lessons from you. I have been searching for an art program for my kids and this is an answer to my prayers! God bless!

  48. volume 1 would be fun as we are just starting and it looks like something I would use in the future. Why not try and get it free! ;-)

  49. Let’s start at the very beginning… a very good place to start… We would like Vol. I, er, or the whole set would be great! Thanks for the giveaway!

  50. My children are still very young, so probably the “Basics” volume would work best for them. But all the DVDs look fantastic! I love the curriculum and am so glad to have found it!

  51. I think Volume 1 would be the best fit for our family, as we’re just starting. My kids would love formal art lessons, though, and I’ve been looking for an affordable way to accomplish that. Thanks for the giveaway!

  52. We would start with volume 1 since we haven’t done any art studies yet in our homeschool. My 2 girls are only 6 & 8 so they need to learn the basics.

  53. My children haven’t had any real art instruction so I would think Volume One with the basics would be where I would want to start. Thanks for the chance to win!

  54. I guess Vol. 1 would be where we’d need to start. My oldest is only almost 7 and hasn’t done much in the lines of formal art lessons at all yet.

  55. I would really like to win this set. I’ve been neglecting art for years. My children like art and crafts. They do them on their own, but would definitely benefit from the DVDs.

  56. Wish STL had year 2 ready and you were giving that away. We LOVE STL Art Class–already have the 9 DVD set and have seen a huge improvement in my already artistic children’s abilities (and in my not so artistic endeavors!). Whoever wins–you will thoroughly enjoy the set.

  57. Volume 1 would work the best for us because we are just beging! I would LOVE to win this!My daughter LOVES art and I am not good enough at it myself to teach her!

  58. I love this giveaway and review. Right now I am homeschooling one of my younger sons who is six. I would say that the first version lessons 1-4 would be best. I really love art and can’t wait for him to learn.

  59. I would love to win this for my children! We’d probably want to start at the beginning since they are younger. Thanks for the giveaway!

  60. I home educate my 3 children, ages 9, 8 and 3 years old. I would love to get started with Volume 1 of the Art Class library from See the Light. I have never been very artistic, I’m crafty, but I’ve never learned to draw, it is impossible to teach what you don’t know.

  61. My children are all very artistic. My oldest at home, plays 4 musical instruments (not at the same time ;) my 8 year old has shown an interest in drawing and is able to follow instruction very well. The set would be more for him and we would start with the 1st CD. My 4 year old can barely draw a circle so it may be a few years for him. My oldest child (grown and moved out with a family of her own) loves to paint, and create beautiful things. We would love this series!

  62. Volume 1 would be wonderful. This is my first year homeschooling and my daughter LOVES art, but I am nothing like an art teacher, so we could learn together!

  63. My daughter has decided she’s going to be an artist, and this biologist momma is trying her hardest to understand and help. These dvd’s would be a great aide in assisting her artistic pursuits! :-)

  64. I tried to comment before, but I don’t see it. Anyway, we’d probably start at the beginning with Vol 1! I have looked at this set before and would love to win it!
