Resurrection Sunday is a time of new beginnings. It is a colorful, bright holiday, full of beauty and fresh emotion. Celebrating Easter with art just feels right!
This year, we chose to purchase See the Light’s Ultimate Crossmaker Set. The set includes a DVD with a story based on the Resurrection story and art projects using chalk, watercolor and colored pencils. There is a CD of songs and hymns, a set of colored pencils and chalks, as well as a black light for the reveal of your children’s shining masterpieces!
Because there is so much included on this DVD, you can make the set stretch throughout the Lenten season OR you can have a new project each year for several years. We are planning to do all of the projects this year, but because it is still early in the season, we have only watched the Crossmaker movie and completed the chalk art, so that’s what you will see in this post.
We started by watching The Crossmaker story as a family. I pointed out the art in the story, and my 11 year old daughter even tried a few sketches of her own.
A few days later, we took our homeschool afternoon to work on the chalk art portion of the DVD. Here’s a video I put together of that project:
The ages of the children who participated were 5, 7, 10, and 11. My 14 year old daughter was taking photos and my 17 year old son was watching the toddlers. However, the older toddler did join in for a bit before growing tired of the project. This project worked well for this age group, and would definitely have spanned much older ages as well. If you are going to have your younger children sit in on the project, I would suggest giving them colored pencils rather than chalk.
It is mentioned in the DVD, but be sure to have tissues and wipes nearby to clean off everyone’s hands. Chalk is messy! That said, all of my children LOVED getting in there and blending the colors with their fingers. No one minded being a little messy.
When the children finished their drawings, I had them each pose with their art. It was fun to see how even the youngest child had an amazing chalk drawing, and my 11 year old daughter had such a wonderful time, she made me take her to Hobby Lobby later in the afternoon to buy her own larger set of chalks!
(as you can tell, she was beyond excited!)
After, we took these photos, we went to my bedroom and crowded into my walk-in closet with the blacklight from the Crossmaker Ultimate Set for the grand reveal! The chalk used on the angel is florescent chalk, so it glows when a blacklight is on. The children were so excited to see their pictures glow!
We hung the pictures in our entry way where everyone can see them for the Easter season. They make me smile every time I walk by them. Wonderful drawings – wonderful memories!

I don’t know that I have a favorite Easter memory. Easter is my favorite holiday so I enjoy all of them. I do remember vividly the Easter is snowed (in April, in the south) and we had our pretty pastel and thinnish Easter attire on …..with our winter coats and boots. I guess I was maybe 10 at the time.
I also wanted to say I just love See the Light, we’ve enjoyed everything we’ve ever done through them and I’m so glad you introduced us to this art program.

My dad plays the Easter song by 2nd chapter of acts every Easter morning. He has since I was a kid and still, though my sister and I are married and have our own families, he calls each of us and plays the song over the phone for us. Far and away, my most memorable Easter tradition.

I’m not sure what my favorite Easter memory is, but one memorable Easter eve/middle of the night we had had lots of rain and the creek in front of our house overflowed and washed out part of our yard and part of the road. I do have a far off memory of a sunrise service on the beach at my grandparents, too.
Lauren says
when I was younger our church had sunrise services on Easter morning. Everyone would come out in their comfy clothes and blankets and there would be worship and warm drinks as we watched the sunrise. I remember in my teen years going on my own with some friends from the youth group. My parents aren’t too fond of waking up early haha!
Where we live now, our current church doesn’t do that. So I have been taking a blanket to my front yard and any littles that are awake before the sunrise (which is most of them) ????. And we play worship music on my phone and watch the sunrise! Oh I love that! Even typing this is making excited about Easter sunrise!

I was a tomboy growing up, but there was always something truly exciting about dressing up in my special Easter dress and going to church with my family Easter morning. I was married the day before Easter in 2007 and was beyond blessed to have my family, including my in-laws, there at church with me on my first Easter Sunday as a wife. I can’t think of a better way to start a marriage.
Christine says
My favorite memory is of us as children, with my cousins, searching for Easter nests filled with chocolate at my grandma’s house.
Pam says
My favorite Easter memory would be knowing our kids understand that the day is not about the bunnies and eggs but about the sacrifice Jesus made for us by dying on the cross to pay the price for our sins.
Katherine H. says
My favorite Easter memory is of a church back home when I was a kid. Each year for lent they hung beautiful purple and white scarves from their large cross on the front lawn. The church was located on the corner of one of the busiest intersections in town. I remember watching hundreds of people drive by this intersection and seeing the beautiful cross.

My Easter memories as a child aren’t anything I want to be repeating for my children now. They weren’t terrible, just filled with Easter bunny, lots of candy and (for some reason) watching the Wizard of Oz. Some of my best memories with my own kids are flowering the cross at church and taking a family picture in front of it every year.
Nikki says
I’m sure my daughter would LOVE this! When I tried to enter the coupon code, it wasn’t working. I sent them a message on Facebook.

As a kid, I loved going to sunrise service every year, and the smell of lilies still
takes me back to that sanctuary. As a young adult, I was absolutely blown away by the power and joy of the resurrection at an Easter Vigil service at Church of the Resurrection in Wheaton, IL.
Amber says
My favorite Easter memory is every year we color Easter eggs and then when the kids go to bed my hubby and I hide them around the house for the kids to find in the morning before church. They love it! It is always so much fun trying to come up with new hiding places year after year.

Hunting for Easter eggs with my family. I also loved white chocolate bunnies!

My favorite Easter memory is getting a new dress. Growing up, it was the highlight of spring, and we were always so excited to wear this new treat to church. As a young child, my mom would make matching dresses (and sometimes bonnets) for me and my sister.

Some of my favorite memories with my 8 children are using the Resurrection eggs and the book Benjamin’s Box to tell the story of Easter. You hide the eggs and then when the kids all find them you open them up one at a time with the book’s prompting and there is an object inside each egg to represent part of the Resurrection story. My younger kids were always captivated by this. Smile. Always enjoy reading your blog. Your recipes and ideas are always helpful and encouraging! We love the dutch pancakes! Smile.

I would love to do this with my kids. We need a project this Easter season.

My favorite Easter memory is going out to a friend’s house in the country. They lived on quite a few acres with big trees and beautiful landscaping everywhere and fun climbing toys and a swingset. We did an Easter egg hunt and had a meal at their house. The fellowship and the Easter egg hunt were so enjoyable and left such fond memories of Easter.

My favorite Easter memory is going to my grandparents house and my sister and I would wear matching Easter outfits. We’d go to church with my grandmother and smell all the lilies and hyacinths in the sanctuary.

Your kids did a fantastic job with those drawings! I’m impressed and excited to try it with my children. I’ve been too lax with art projects lately…they need a chance to learn something new and be a bit messy 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration!
Sherry says
Oh, and a favorite Easter memory would have to be when my cousins were at our house one year and we had a big egg hunt. I don’t know that my kids even have Easter memories since we don’t do egg hunts or baskets with them…..maybe something like this would be good…along with the resurrection cookies (we’ve done that and they really liked it)….something else to think about.

I think my favorite Easter memory would be when I was a teen and got up at 3 am to drive to and participate in an instrumental group playing specially for a church’s sunrise and main service. Being able to participate in the service in a beautiful way was very meaningful to me.
