Half My Stuff Saturday – Girls’ Room

I have to admit, the only thing keeping me focused as I declutter is the fact that I feel obligated to bring all of you Half My Stuff Saturday each week.  I was all over the place this week decluttering different spaces, but never one room until I realized I better get on the ball and do a room for Half My Stuff!

So, as always, when there’s dire decluttering needed, I call my mom.

This time the emergency was the girls’ room. Bad does not even begin to describe the state of the room on any given day.  They clean it, but moments later, it is a mess.  They are paper collectors, stuffed animal collectors, and trash collectors…literally.  As in, I put it in the trash, and one child in particular digs it back out.  Taking out the trash around here requires stealth!

This room has been rather neglected since we finished painting and putting up border.  I had put all the girls’ stuff in a big box and that box ended up overflowing.  I am so glad all of you got me motivated to tackle this room!

Here’s the BEFORE:

They had JUST cleaned it the day before!  It is obvious TOO MUCH STUFF was the culprit here!

The hardest part of cleaning this room is keeping the girls out of the room–the Trash Digger in particular!  But, we managed to persevere and get the job done.

Here’s an overview of what we did:

Once upon a time, I had a set limit as to how many stuffed animals could live on each bed.  At some point, I got lax on that.  So, one of the first things we did was remove all the stuffed animals and put all but 2 or so downstairs where the stuffed animals belong. The top bunk child was sleeping with something like 10 animals!

We also pulled all the papers out from under the bed and tidied up the beds.

My 4 year old son shares this room with his sisters until his younger brother is more accustomed to sleeping in his new toddler bed.  The 4 year old’s toddler bed had been sticking out in this room like a sore thumb.  We managed to get it pushed up against the wall at the foot of the girls’ bunk beds.

That left space against the same wall for a shelving system I had downstairs that wasn’t serving any real purpose.  We brought that up and organized toys and things that most often find their way into the girls’ room.

I hung Megan’s horse coat rack above the shelf so we could keep hats and bags there.  The top shelf has a basket for crocheting and a plastic tub for paper dolls (the girls’ latest craze).  On the second shelf are their 18″ dolls and a basket for clothes.  Bottom shelf contains stamps, beads, and favorite magazines. {as you can see, Micah pulled a fast one on me before I snapped this picture by turning the yellow magazine holder around!}

The closet mess you saw was really yet another paper overflow mess, so I got that under control and got rid of some shoes, and ended with this:

Long ago, we gave up on the closet doors staying on their track, but I don’t mind an open closet as long as it is neat!  The wicker chest contains stationery and keepsakes…mostly of the Megan sort. {have any of you guessed yet which child is the collector???}

I also made a printed copy of the photo of the shelf and hung it next to the shelf so the girls can tidy it on their own. This was an idea I got from somewhere I can’t remember right now.  At first, I thought it was a little cheesy, but I totally see the merit in it now!  Can’t wait to see if it actually works!

While mom was here I toted 3 boxes of books and 8 bags of miscellaneous stuff to the thrift store down the street!  If it hadn’t been so thrilling to finally rid myself of that clutter, I might have found it somewhat depressing, considering no one ought to have that much “junk.”

One full bag of trash and one full bag of thrift store goods came from the girls’ room alone, so as for whether or not I got rid of half THEIR stuff…yes, I believe I did!  Maybe they will sleep better too!

Half My Stuff Saturday – Boys’ Room

{Sorry folks, no pics this week.  The ones I had taken were horrible and I just didn’t have the time to take more and throw them in here.  Life happens.  However, I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir. ;) }

My little boys don’t actually share a room to sleep, but they do share a room to house their clothes.  Eventually, they will both be in this room, but not until Micah learns to sleep a little better and Keian learns to be a bit quieter when he goes to bed.

This room is probably the least cluttered bedroom we have.  There is one dresser, one crib, one toddler bed, one diaper stacker, and one closet.  Nothing else.  No toys, no nonsense.

I had just gone through the dresser weeding out things to make room for the matching outfits I had purchased, so really the only place to get rid of things was the closet.

I moved the diaper stacker out of the closet and color-coded the clothes hangers (most of the clothes in the closet are church clothes).  From there, I tidied and pitched things that didn’t belong on the shelf above and the floor below.  It was a fairly quick job.  Painless?  Not so much.  Still having major sciatica issues.

I am hoping to get a changing table for this baby (I’ve never had one!) and stack the diapers in there.  I think that would just look so much neater, plus I could really stand to not have to bend over to change diapers!

So, let’s see…tally for Half My Stuff Saturday?

I’ve done the Dining Room, the Living Room & Hallway, the Books, the Kitchen (most of it), and now the Boys’ Room.  Upstairs all that is left is the Girls’ Room, the Master Bedroom & Bathroom, the Main Bathroom, and the Coat Closet.  Downstairs? I have three words for you…

Full Basement

Ugh.

Half My Stuff Saturday – The Kitchen Again

Since I didn’t quite get finished last week, I thought I’d plunge right back in this week.

I also had a renewed mission thanks to my mom.

We got to talking about small kitchens and brainstorming how to get more counter space from my little kitchen.  I decided the countertops on either side of my sink HAD to be cleared.  That meant the coffee/tea area I had put together would need to find a new home and the recycling that seems to always fill up the other side would need to find a new place to meet before heading to the garage where the recycling tubs reside.

So, I started in the most logical place:  the cup/glass/mug cabinet.

How many people live in this household? 50?

I’m sure some of you are scratching your heads about why I would start there, but really, I have a reason.  This cabinet is where I proposed to put the coffee/tea fixings from the cabinet below it.  However, looking at the state it was in, this would not be a simple task.

I organized and pitched, then added the coffee and tea things, ending up with this:

Now, remember these are the overflow because I have 7 cups on the other side of the kitchen that are the ones we are to use daily.  I’ve entertained thoughts of putting a lock on this cabinet so they can’t pillage through it, but of course, then how would I retrieve my beloved coffee?  So anyway, my countertop now looks like this:

I ended up putting my recycling in a box in my dishwasher (that I rarely use because of my new system of keeping things clean)

Onward and forward…on the other side of the sink is a cabinet that holds my herbals teas and some extras:

There were some seriously outdated items in there.  See that Enfamil?  That’s from when Micah was a newborn and the meds from the C-section zapped my milk supply.  Needed to be pitched!

I got rid of tons of stuff in there and ended up with this:

Awwww, much better!

The next cabinet has no pictures because it all happened so fast.  Ever read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie?  Well, my storage containers/mixing bowls cabinet went about like that!  I needed a bowl to make banana bread in, but when I opened the cabinet and everything came crashing down on me, I decided I must first clean out the cabinet and get rid of, you guessed it…half my stuff!  I did that, only to realize I then needed to go through my lids drawer to get rid of the corresponding lids.  Once that was accomplished, I was able to start my banana bread…only to discover my oven had finally bit the dust.  Lovely.

Next stop…the stuff that lurks beneath the sink!

And the after:

Some of those products I don’t use often.  Some of them my mom uses when she comes over. ;)

Is anyone else worn out yet by my tiny kitchen that seems utterly overwhelming?  How is it possible such a small space could create such angst?

I have 2 more areas that need to be addressed before I can put this room to rest (and hopefully keep it looking neat and tidy from there), but those will just have to wait.  I’m at a homeschool conference this weekend and need to expend my energy elsewhere for the time being.

So, how is the decluttering coming with all of you?  Leave me a note and if you post pics on your blog, leave that link too!

By the way, remember I was going to keep you updated on my FLYlady progress.  Well, there is no progress because I decided FLYlady really wasn’t for me at this juncture in my life–a conclusion I had come to before, but thought was quite possibly my own mental roadblock.

I’ve since gone back to something tried and true I will share with you next week. ;)

Half My Stuff Saturday – The Kitchen

I have to admit…I’m scared.

On any given day, my kitchen looks like this:

It was worse, but I cleaned a bit prior to this pic being taken! *gasp*

Now, I KNOW I’ve told you how my husband’s friend taught me to clean my kitchen, and you know I was back on the FLYlady bandwagon, but if I were to be totally upfront and honest (which I strive to be at all times), my kitchen is a disaster.

Why?  I don’t know.  I wish I could pinpoint the why behind it, but suffice it to say it has ALWAYS been this way (well, except for those 2 years I was a full-fledged FLYbaby).  I suspect it has something to do with, dare I say it, laziness?

I’d like to blame it on the fact that my kitchen is tiny.  I’d like to blame it on having to cook 3 meals a day for 7 people.  I’d even like to think it is simply a matter of having too much stuff (which is why this is the room I chose for this week), but I really don’t think that’s all there is to it.  By the time the meal is prepared and eaten and dishes cleared, I just want to retreat to my comfy chair and stare off into outer space…the rest of the afternoon…

And alas, my lack of gumption is rubbing off on my children.  I’ve been so convicted of this lately it isn’t even funny!  Everywhere I turn is a mirror pointed in my direction showing me precisely the person I truly am. When it comes to cleaning the kitchen, I am lazy about it and just don’t want to do it.

So, I came up with a plan…

Several of our summers have been spent vacationing in cabins where all you have is just what you need and that is it.  One cabin we frequently stay at barely has enough plates and cups for our family.  We wash after every single meal because we have to. Laziness cannot live there for very long.

So, that’s what I decided to do.  I’m not going to get rid of all but 7 dish and cup combinations, but I can make all but that many totally inaccessible; therefore, forcing me out of my laziness.  That’s what I did on Monday.  By Monday night, my dish cabinet looked like this:

Is that an empty shelf I see???

On the bottom shelf are 7 cups, 7 bowls, and 7 plates (of varying degrees of breakability).  Everything else that used to litter that cabinet is packed and stacked into the top shelf, far beyond my reach.

I also managed to get the lower cabinets on one side of my galley kitchen organized.  There were a few things I could get rid of, but most of the things on that side were needed items.

That’s all I managed in the kitchen this week, but it’s a good start!  Anyone care to share the state of their kitchen???

The Community Box

Once again, something that was not my idea, but something I was so excited to implement, I just had to share!

The Community Box.

What is a Community Box?  Glad you asked!

Imagine all your unloved, unwanted, yet still quite usable items going into a tub that is then passed around among friends {in the “Community”}.  Imagine that box eventually making its way back to you with other people’s unloved, unwanted, but maybe just perfect for you items inside!  It’s resourceful living at its best!

So, grab a tub, grab some stuff, fill ‘er up, find some friends, and pass it on!

Half My Stuff Saturday – Books

I love books.  I love the feel of the pages between my fingers.  I love their weight and texture.  While Kindle intrigues me, it also saddens me {and reminds me of Planet of the Apes} because it suggests that one day, books will be extinct.

So I hoard collect them.

There's more on the floor, but I refused to take a picture of my books being treated that way!

Can I get rid of half of them?  NO.  But, I can rid my shelves of the twaddle {as Charlotte Mason was so fond of saying} and from there, organize.  That’s precisely what I did this past week.

Several years back, a friend came over and we organized my books into categories.  It was heavenly.  Somewhere between a move and a couple more babies, I lost that organization.  So, this week my mom came over {thank you, Lord, for moms who like to organize!} and we worked tirelessly through my library, sorting and organizing into such categories as Biographies, Educational, Readers, History, Bible, etc.

This was the result:

I just sat in my rocker and admired the beauty of well-manicured bookshelves.

I also did my cookbook cabinet.  It was a scary-bad mess similar to my library, but on a much, much, much smaller scale {remember, I am NOT a foodie}.

Most of the cookbooks are hiding in there somewhere.

I removed all the loose papers, stood the books up on end, and removed the stash of Christmas/Easter/Given-to-us-for-no-good-reason candy I keep “hidden” in there.  The candy hit the trash {as it always does about this time of year} and the loose papers hit my Meals Binder {yes, someday I will get around to posting about all my binders…I promise!}

This might convince me to become a foodie!

Frankly, the next day I was feeling the aftermath of all this hard work, but the feeling I get every time I open my cookbook cabinet to get a recipe and every time I go downstairs to get a book is worth every ache in my tired, pregnant body!

So, what have you been decluttering this week?
