I’ve had a fascination with old Christian Classics ever since I read Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss (by the way, if you have never read this gem of a book, please do!). Then I read Teddy’s Button to my children, followed by Joel, a Boy from Galilee (which we are currently rereading), and I realized what treasures these books truly are!
Many of these books can be found in reprint by Lamplighter Publishing, but they are rather expensive. That said, you are paying for a nicely bound book and I do so love old-feeling books. However, the practical – ahem, frugal – side of me, was thrilled when I ran across a whole slew of FREE Christian Classics as I was searching for GA Henty books on Kindle.
While I could never offer an exhaustive list, I did choose a few to highlight here. These can be read using the Kindle app or an actual Kindle reader.
(NOTE: These were free at the time of this posting – be sure to check the price!)
The Life and Letters of Elizabeth Prentiss

Hi Amy,
Thanks for the links. In case you don’t already know this, you can listen to the Lamplighter Theater audio dramatizations of some of these books on refnet.fm online. Every evening we listen to their broadcast together. It comes on at 7:30 Texas time… not sure where you are. We just enjoyed A Peep Behind the Scenes. They are currently playing The Robbers Cave. My kids love having it to look forward to each night, so your kids might enjoy it as well.

What ages would these be for? Kids? Adults? Would reading aloud my mom be better? I can’t always read books faster than my daughter, so it would be helpful to know.
Amy says
I use them as read alouds until about middle school. But they enjoy being read to long after that. 😉

Thanks!

Thanks so much for this awesome list of books! I love to read but we don’t have a great library and I hate to spend money on a book I’m only going to read once.

Most we have read already, but you had a few new ones I will have to look into. We love Lamplighters. A Peep Behind the Scenes is my all time favorite. I can so relate to the poor child.

Thank you, thank you!!! I got them all!

Thanks so much Amy!
I just found one of the Henty books we needed for our history lessons in the free list! It was a hard to find one, so expensive! which was also not available with our local library system and thus I had not gotten it. I was disappointed, but it was just not in the budget.
🙂
My kids will be so excited!
Be blessed!

Thanks so much for this list!!! I had forgotten some of these that I had been searching for. Having spent our budget for this school year, the kindle versions will come in handy!!! I really love your blog though I rarely comment!

Awww, thank you!

Oh … I LOVE Lamplighter books! They are REALLY expensive so I wait until the HSBC offers a discount or until a discount is sent in the newsletter. I missed a recent discount because we didn’t have the funds in time. I read Jessica’s First Prayer and Teddy’s Button to my 4 1/2 year old. We are currently reading Little Threads together – it is a book about obedience. I want so badly to read Stepping Heavenward, but can’t afford to buy myself a book. It just doesn’t feel right. I saw that it was free online … I think it was Gutenberg? … but it is very difficult to read it online. Thank you for the links. I wish I had a Kindle! The computer is too old for the Mac download. BUMMER. Thanks – maybe soon we’ll have one.

I hear Christie’s Old Organ is an amazing book too!!!!!!!
Mindy at Grateful for Grace says
This is so fabulous. Thank you.
I tried to search for some more Lamplighter books and was coming up empty. I even searched for some of the titles you shared and they didn’t come up. Did you do something specific (other than searching in the Kindle Store)?
Thanks!
Amy says
When I first tried searching for Lamplighter nothing came up, but one thing that worked was looking for specific authors.
Mindy at Grateful for Grace says
Ok, thanks. Sometimes Amazon’s organization for listings is strange. 🙂 Did you see that Basket of Flowers is only $1.29? Yippee! 🙂
Amy says
When I first looked I found Stepping Heavenward in audio for cheap, but didn’t get it. Now I can’t find it. 🙁

We would love to win a 3-month/3 dvd subscription to Christian Cinema! I am tired of all the garbage that is on, that even when you screen things from your kids, they still hear it in commercials etc.
Carrie says
What a blessing! Thank you for taking the time to post these books! I’m on the search now to add to my Kindle!

I would like to win the Christian Cinema trial! I also LOVE the books posted above!
Thanks!

Thank you so much for this reference. I’ve been feeling poorly for the last few days and these have been a blessing to me, as I’m sure they will be to my little ones as we read them together or apart.

I’m so excited! We loved Teddy’s Button which we own in hardcover. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to personally read more good classic books. This inspires me! Thank you for sharing your find with us!!
